During the 16th of each month (the day when Shinran Shinran died), and the Days of Remembrance (death of family members), our Buddhist communities observe the ancient tradition of Enforcement Shojin or Shojin-bi, which encourage us to reassess the value of all sentient beings through the practice vegetarian. If you are already a vegetarian, you can participate in food vegans (no animal product at all), that is, a strictly vegetable diet that excludes all animal products, whether alive or dead.

The abstention from eating meat gives us a spiritual opportunity to reflect humbly, even during just one day a month at the sacrifice of countless beings that sustain our lives. Enforcement Shojin allows us to remember deeply that no day passes in which other creatures are killed for giving us the possibility to live. Therefore, during those days when not practicing Shojin-bi, we should reflect and use their sacrifice of gratitude for the purpose of awakening of all beings, including ourselves.
