UN considers climate change global security issue

The Security Council of United Nations expressed his concern in the sense that climate change may aggravate the threats to peace and security. The statement came after what diplomats described as intense negotiations between Germany and Russia, which initially opposed any action by the Council.

Germany, which holds the Council presidency this month and launched the debate that took all day, pressed by the statement that links the first time in the history of the Council on climate change to peace and world security. Diplomats said that after Russia blocked a consensus on the declaration proposed by Germany on Wednesday, Germany began high-level contacts with Moscow that produced agreement on a weaker version.

The diplomats spoke on condition of anonymity because the negotiations were private. The change came after a day of speeches by representatives from over 60 countries, including small islands like Nauru in the Pacific, whose existence is threatened by the rising the ocean, which scientists attribute to climate change.

United States had described unsuccessful attempts to reach a consensus in the morning as “pathetic” and “shortsighted.” “The Security Council expresses its concern that may arise possible security implications for the loss of territory of some states caused by rising sea level, particularly in some small island at sea level, “said the statement adopted by the afternoon. “I would like to thank all the board members for the cooperation and flexibility shown in the intensive negotiations during the last days, “said German Ambassador Peter Wittig. “This was a result of our discussion is good news.”
